Reclaim your growth
Did you know any tree can be made into a bonsai?
A few years ago, I went to the Bronx Botanical Garden and saw an exhibit on bonsai trees. I figured bonsai was a special type of tree. But as I read the display, one sentence stopped me cold:
Any tree can be bonsai’d.
What?! That blew my mind.
Google’s AI puts it like this:
“Bonsai is a horticultural technique, not a species. It involves dwarfing trees through pruning and shaping. Almost any woody plant that can grow in a container and tolerate pruning can be a bonsai.”
So, it’s not the type of tree.
It’s the treatment.
Some trees become naturally stunted: growing from a crack in a cliff, shaped by wind and survival. But in bonsai, the smallness is intentional. It takes ongoing work to keep that tree small.
And here’s the kicker: If you take a bonsai and plant it in open soil, remove the pruning and the pot – it can grow to FULL-size.
Let that sink in.
5 Questions on Growth
If you feel like you’ve been bonsai’d (at work, at home, in life) here are a few questions to consider:
- Who is keeping you small? (Someone else – or you?)
- What’s keeping you small? (Your environment? Beliefs? Doubts?)
- What might happen if those constraints were removed?
- Where would you need to be “replanted” to grow?
- What would your full-size self look like?
Growth Starts with Awareness: Who Is Keeping You Small?
The first step in personal growth is awareness. Just like a bonsai doesn’t prune itself, sometimes we don’t realize that external forces are shaping us. Maybe you’ve had a boss who limited your opportunities, or a family member who doubted your abilities. Perhaps you’ve felt held back by cultural expectations, office politics, or even an unspoken rule that you “stay in your lane.” These influences may come with good intentions – or not – but either way, they can leave you pruned back, unable to stretch into your full potential. Recognizing who has their hand on the shears is the beginning of reclaiming your growth.
Growth Requires Honesty: What’s Keeping You Small?
Once you’ve looked outward, it’s time to look inward. External forces are powerful, but sometimes the bonsai shears are in our own hands. Maybe you hold onto beliefs that tell you you’re not ready or not enough. Maybe you doubt your ability to thrive beyond your current “container.” Or maybe you avoid opportunities because the possibility of failure – or even the possibility of success – feels overwhelming. Being honest about the internal stories and doubts that keep you bonsai’d is uncomfortable, but it’s also the key to creating space for expansion.
Growth Expands with Imagination: What Happens If Constraints Are Removed?
Now, picture this: the pot is gone, the pruning shears are set aside, and you’ve been replanted in open soil. What would you pursue if the limitations disappeared? What strengths would finally have room to grow? What parts of yourself would you allow to reach toward the sun?
This kind of imaginative exercise isn’t just daydreaming. It’s a powerful way to reveal possibilities you can’t always see from inside your current pot. By asking yourself what growth might look like without constraints, you start training your mind to notice opportunities and pathways you might otherwise miss.
Growth Flourishes with Action: Where Do You Need to Be Replanted?
Awareness and imagination are powerful starting points, but real growth happens when you act. That may mean finding a new role or career path, or seeking out a healthier environment. It could look like building a network of peers who support and challenge you, or working with a mentor or coach who helps you expand instead of pruning you back.
Every tree thrives in the soil that nourishes it. The question for you is: where do you need to be replanted so you can grow to your full size?
Growth Vision: What Would Your Full-Size Self Look Like?
A bonsai may be small, but inside it still holds the DNA of a full tree. The same is true for you. Your potential hasn’t disappeared – it’s just been contained.
So, imagine for a moment: if nothing held you back, how would you show up? Would you speak more boldly, take new risks, or live with greater ease?
Your full-size self is already within you. The more clearly you picture it, the easier it becomes to grow into it.
Final Reflection: You Weren’t Born a Bonsai
You weren’t born a bonsai. You were born to grow. If you’ve been bonsai’d, it doesn’t mean you’re broken – it just means your growth has been contained. And like any bonsai replanted in open ground, your potential for growth is still intact.
So ask yourself: Who is keeping me small? What stories do I tell myself that hold me back? What might happen if my constraints disappeared? And where do I need to be replanted so I can grow to my natural, full size?
