Manhattan Coaching Associates

AI, Privacy & Transparency

How information is handled across the MCA website, assessments, exercises, analytics, and AI-powered features.

Our commitments

  • You remain in control. The AI helps you navigate the MCA framework and resources. It does not make decisions for you.
  • Your AI conversations are not permanently stored by MCA by default. They are processed to generate a response, not used to build a profile about you.
  • Your work stays on your device whenever practical. Assessment responses, exercise notes, progress, and generated materials are designed to remain in your browser unless you intentionally choose to share them.
  • Your reflections are not used for marketing. Conversation content, assessment responses, and exercise notes are not intentionally sent to Google Analytics or advertising platforms.
  • You should know when AI is being used. MCA aims to make the use of AI, structured software, local storage, and third-party services understandable.

Purpose

The AI features within the Manhattan Coaching Associates ecosystem are designed to help people navigate the website, understand the decision framework, complete assessments, work through exercises, organize their thinking, and better understand the MCA resources available to them.

The AI exists to support the MCA experience. It complements, but does not replace, human conversation, professional coaching, or your own judgment.

Technology should serve people, not the other way around. Every design decision within the MCA platform is intended to strengthen your agency, increase transparency, and minimize unnecessary collection of personal information.

Our Philosophy

Privacy is part of the experience, not an afterthought.

Many people arrive while thinking through meaningful life and career decisions. They should be able to explore those decisions without worrying that their thoughts are being collected, profiled, or used in ways they did not intend.

Whenever practical, information should remain under the visitor's control.

Technology should increase agency, not reduce it.

Human Agency

You remain in control.

The AI does not make decisions for you, determine what you “should” do, or replace your own judgment.

Its purpose is to help you better understand your situation, navigate the MCA resources, and support your own decision-making process.

Many important life decisions do not have a single objectively correct answer. The AI is designed to help you navigate uncertainty, not eliminate it.

AI Disclosure

When using AI features, you are interacting with an artificial intelligence system.

You are not communicating directly with Chuck Blechman or another human coach unless you intentionally schedule or begin a coaching conversation.

Using the AI is always optional.

Scope of the AI

The AI is designed to:

  • explain concepts within the MCA framework
  • help you navigate the website
  • guide you through assessments
  • guide you through exercises
  • summarize or organize information
  • answer questions about available resources
  • help you understand recommendations generated by the system

The AI is not intended to provide:

  • coaching in place of a human coach
  • therapy
  • crisis intervention
  • medical advice
  • legal advice
  • financial advice
  • emergency support

Some situations are better served by a qualified professional or a human conversation.

AI and Software

Not every feature within the MCA platform uses artificial intelligence.

Many functions, including assessment scoring, exercise recommendations, progress tracking, saved state, and PDF generation, are intentionally performed through structured software rather than AI.

Artificial intelligence is used where conversation, explanation, navigation, or reflection adds value.

Structured Guidance

Whenever practical, important decisions within the MCA ecosystem are generated through structured software logic rather than AI interpretation.

Examples include:

  • assessment scoring
  • stage identification
  • exercise recommendations
  • progress tracking
  • saved state
  • PDF generation

The AI may explain, clarify, or help you navigate these recommendations, but it should not silently replace or override them.

Explainability

When the AI offers a suggestion or interpretation, it should explain why.

Rather than presenting conclusions as facts, it should connect its observations to what you shared so that you can decide whether they fit your experience.

Whenever practical, the reasoning behind structured recommendations should also be understandable.

Privacy by Design

Whenever practical, your information remains under your control.

The MCA platform is intentionally designed to minimize unnecessary collection and storage of personal information.

Where practical, information remains on your device rather than being transmitted to MCA servers.

This may include:

  • assessment responses
  • assessment results
  • exercise progress
  • exercise notes
  • completed exercises
  • generated PDFs
  • copied reflections

Unless you intentionally choose to share this information, it is not automatically transmitted to Manhattan Coaching Associates.

AI Conversations

When you send a message to the AI:

  1. Your message is securely transmitted to OpenAI.
  2. OpenAI generates a response.
  3. The response is returned to your browser.

By default:

  • MCA does not permanently store AI conversations.
  • Conversation text is not used for marketing.
  • Conversations are not attached to customer profiles.
  • Conversation content is not sold or shared with advertisers.
  • Conversation content is not intentionally logged unless you explicitly choose to share it or future features clearly disclose otherwise.

OpenAI

The AI functionality is provided through the OpenAI API.

At the time of writing:

  • API requests are transmitted securely using HTTPS.
  • API data is not used to train OpenAI models by default.
  • OpenAI may temporarily retain API data for security, abuse prevention, and operational purposes in accordance with its published policies.
  • OpenAI's handling of API data is governed by its own published privacy and data usage policies.

MCA periodically reviews these policies and will update this document if they materially change.

Local Storage

Whenever practical, personal information is stored locally within your browser rather than on MCA servers.

This allows you to return to your work without requiring MCA to maintain copies of your personal reflections.

You decide when information leaves your device.

Examples include:

  • downloading a PDF
  • copying text
  • sending a message to the AI
  • submitting feedback
  • requesting a conversation

These transitions should be visible, understandable, and intentional, not hidden.

Data Retention

Information is retained only for as long as necessary to provide the requested service or comply with applicable legal obligations.

Whenever practical:

  • AI conversations are not retained.
  • Assessment and exercise state remain in your browser.
  • Feedback is retained only to improve the MCA ecosystem.
  • Contact information is retained only as needed to communicate with you.

If future features require retaining additional information, the retention period and purpose will be disclosed.

Analytics

The website uses Google Analytics to understand how people use the website and to improve the experience.

Examples include:

  • page views
  • navigation paths
  • feature usage
  • button clicks
  • assessment starts
  • assessment completions
  • exercise openings
  • exercise completions
  • PDF downloads

Analytics help improve the website and understand which resources are most useful.

Whenever practical:

  • AI conversation content is not sent to Google Analytics.
  • Assessment responses are not sent to Google Analytics.
  • Exercise notes are not sent to Google Analytics.
  • Reflective writing is not sent to Google Analytics.
  • Analytics measure usage patterns rather than personal content.

Feedback

You may be invited to provide feedback about the usefulness of the website or its resources.

Providing feedback is always optional.

Only the information you intentionally submit is transmitted.

Feedback helps improve the framework, exercises, AI, and overall website experience.

Contacting Manhattan Coaching Associates

If you choose to:

  • send an email
  • submit a contact form
  • schedule a conversation
  • book coaching

then the information you intentionally provide is transmitted to Manhattan Coaching Associates so that we can respond.

This information is handled separately from anonymous website usage.

Human Support

Sometimes software is not the most appropriate form of support.

When appropriate, the platform may recommend speaking with Chuck or another qualified professional.

These recommendations are intended to support your well-being, not to maximize engagement or encourage unnecessary coaching.

Eligibility

My coaching practice is for adults 18 years of age and older. If you are under 18, I am happy to suggest resources or refer you to a coach or counselor who works with teenagers and their parents or guardians.

Bias and Limitations

Artificial intelligence systems can misunderstand context, reflect bias, or make mistakes.

If something does not feel accurate, helpful, or consistent with your experience, trust your own judgment.

The AI is a decision-support tool, not an authority.

No Hidden Persuasion

The AI is not designed to manipulate, pressure, maximize engagement, or influence your decisions for the benefit of MCA.

Its purpose is to support thoughtful decision making rather than encourage unnecessary interaction.

Suggestions to contact Chuck or seek additional support are made only when they appear genuinely relevant, not as automatic sales prompts.

Transparency

Whenever practical, MCA aims to make AI interactions understandable.

This includes being transparent about:

  • when AI is being used
  • what information is transmitted
  • where information is transmitted
  • what is stored
  • what is not stored
  • how recommendations are generated
  • where AI is used
  • where structured software logic is used

New capabilities should not silently expand data collection or materially change how information is handled.

If future features require storing additional information, MCA will explain:

  • what is stored
  • why it is stored
  • who can access it
  • how long it is retained
  • what choices are available

Visitor Controls

Whenever practical, you remain in control of your information.

You may choose to:

  • clear locally stored assessment and exercise data
  • choose whether to interact with AI
  • choose whether to provide feedback
  • choose whether to contact MCA
  • choose what information to share

MCA aims to make these choices visible, understandable, and easy to exercise.

Security

Reasonable technical and administrative safeguards are used to protect information transmitted through the website.

Examples include secure HTTPS communication, server-side storage of API credentials, and minimizing the collection of personal information whenever practical.

No internet-connected system can guarantee absolute security, but MCA is designed to reduce unnecessary exposure of personal information wherever practical.

Internal Engineering Principles

These principles guide the implementation of the MCA platform.

Whenever practical:

  • Assessment state lives in browser local storage.
  • Exercise state lives in browser local storage.
  • Browser state is not uploaded simply to generate PDFs.
  • PDFs are generated locally.
  • AI requests are transmitted only when the visitor intentionally submits a message.
  • Conversation text is not logged by default.
  • Diagnostic logging never includes conversation content.
  • Google Analytics records events and aggregate usage rather than reflective text.
  • API keys remain server-side and are never exposed to visitors.
  • All communication with third-party AI providers uses HTTPS.
  • Third-party services are minimized, documented, and periodically reviewed.

Guiding Principles

The MCA platform is built around the following principles:

  1. Human agency over automation.
  2. Privacy by design.
  3. Transparency over hidden behavior.
  4. Local control over unnecessary data collection.
  5. Explicit sharing over automatic collection.
  6. Structured software where reliability matters.
  7. AI where explanation, navigation, and reflection add value.
  8. Respect for uncertainty rather than false certainty.
  9. Technology in service of people, not the other way around.
  10. Continuous evaluation and improvement.
